Coinbase Wallet alternative — Veyrnox: true self-custody, no Coinbase account
Coinbase Wallet is a legitimately self-custody product — the keys are on your device, not held by Coinbase — but it is built inside the gravitational field of Coinbase the exchange. The onboarding funnels you toward the Coinbase account UX, the "buy crypto" button lands you on Coinbase the custodial exchange, and the underlying recovery primitive is still a BIP-39 seed phrase. VEYRNOX is the Coinbase Wallet alternative for holders who want self-custody with no company adjacent to their keys and no seed phrase to type. Zero KYC. No Coinbase account, no Veyrnox account. No adjacent custodial product. The same multi-chain support — BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT, MATIC, ARB, OP, AVAX, and BNB — in one iOS app, with a Shamir shard on your iPhone and a Shamir shard in your personal cloud (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) instead of twelve words on paper.
Why users switch from Coinbase Wallet
Coinbase Wallet users usually cite specific pains when they migrate — often after a bad experience with the exchange side of the product spilling into the wallet side. Specific issues:
- Custodial creep. Coinbase Wallet is self-custody, but every path in the app leads back to Coinbase the exchange — buy, sell, swap. The lines between "we hold it" and "you hold it" get blurry for new users. Veyrnox has no adjacent custodial product to blur the line.
- Seed phrase in the UI. Coinbase Wallet onboards with a 12-word seed. Phishing pages targeting Coinbase Wallet users all funnel through that primitive. Veyrnox has no seed-phrase field.
- Company identity risk. A wallet named after an exchange inherits reputational risk from the exchange — regulatory action, account freezes, PR incidents. Veyrnox is standalone; nothing about Veyrnox depends on any exchange staying operational.
- Browser-extension surface. Coinbase Wallet ships a browser extension. Veyrnox is mobile-native only — no extension, no persistent JavaScript-scriptable surface.
- No coercion mode. Coinbase Wallet has one unlock. Under duress, that is the whole balance. Veyrnox Safety Plus ships a decoy wallet.
- Recovery model is the seed. Lose the seed, lose the wallet — no exchange-side recovery, because it is genuinely self-custody. Veyrnox uses Shamir across device + your iCloud, so a lost phone reconstitutes from the iCloud shard without exposing a seed on paper.

Migrating from Coinbase Wallet to Veyrnox
Veyrnox can import an existing Coinbase Wallet seed phrase. If you want a completely fresh Veyrnox wallet, you can also create a new one and transfer funds over instead:
- Install Veyrnox from the App Store and complete the 8-digit PIN plus personal cloud shard setup (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). No account, no email, no KYC.
- In Veyrnox, tap Receive on each chain you are moving. Copy the address.
- In Coinbase Wallet, send each asset to the Veyrnox address on the matching chain. Do a small test send first.
- Repeat per chain. Veyrnox uses one EVM address across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, and BNB Chain.
- If some assets sit inside Coinbase the exchange (custodial) rather than Coinbase Wallet (self-custody), withdraw them to the Veyrnox address directly from the exchange side.
- Once every asset is at Veyrnox and Coinbase Wallet shows zero, retire the Coinbase Wallet install. Keep the old seed offline until you are certain nothing is left.
Pricing
Free — $0 forever. Full self-custody, hardware-bound signing in the Secure Enclave, optional seed import when needed, and all 10 supported assets (BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT, MATIC, ARB, OP, AVAX, and BNB).
Safety Plus — $5.99/month. Everything in Free plus Shamir-sharded seed backup across your device and your own cloud (KEK-encrypted shards at rest), and Coercion Resistance — a decoy wallet that unlocks under duress while your real holdings stay hidden.
AI Security Protection — $19.99/month · Coming soon. Everything in Safety Plus plus the AI Security Advisor: real-time warnings on malicious dApps, unsafe DEXs, phishing sites, and AI intervention on Transaction Simulation. See Plans.
All paid tiers are billed through the App Store and can be cancelled any time — self-custody is core to Veyrnox on every tier, so downgrading or cancelling never touches your keys, your balances, or your ability to sign. There is no annual lock-in, no free-trial dark pattern, and no separate exchange or brokerage account attached to your wallet. Compared to Coinbase Wallet, the whole billing surface is shorter: one wallet, one subscription line item, one place to cancel.
Security model
Veyrnox uses Shamir Secret Sharing to split the material needed to reconstruct your keys into KEK-encrypted shards across your device (Secure Enclave) and your personal cloud (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). Reconstitution requires both, happens inside the Secure Enclave, and never surfaces a plaintext key. Veyrnox holds no shard, no key, and runs no signing infrastructure — so Veyrnox cannot recover your wallet on your behalf and cannot be legally compelled to hand it over. Every signing operation across BTC, ETH, SOL, and every supported EVM L2 is gated by Face ID or Touch ID and the 8-digit PIN. RASP (Runtime Application Self-Protection) blocks signing on rooted or jailbroken devices and on phones running instrumentation frameworks. And because default setup does not require displaying a recovery phrase, phishing sites lose the most familiar wallet-restore screen by default. For deeper detail see Security at Veyrnox, No seed phrase wallet, Shamir wallet, and Duress wallet.
What Veyrnox does not do
The wallet market is full of adjacent products that quietly grow the trust surface — custodial swap engines, in-app exchanges, embedded lending, tokenised "yield" schemes, referral programs, and airdrop farms. Veyrnox does none of that. There is no in-app buy or sell flow that routes through a Veyrnox-operated custodian. There is no Veyrnox token, no rewards program, and no incentive structure that depends on you moving assets faster than you would otherwise. There is no analytics beacon collecting a fingerprint of what you hold or which dApps you visit — Veyrnox does not know your balance and does not need to. Every paid feature (Coercion Resistance on Safety Plus, the AI Security Advisor on AI Security Protection when it ships) is a security feature, priced as a subscription, billed through the App Store. That deliberate narrowness is what lets the trust model stay small enough to reason about: hardware-bound signing on your iPhone, two Shamir shards you control, one biometric prompt per transaction, and nothing in the middle.
Frequently asked questions
Is Coinbase Wallet unsafe?
Coinbase Wallet is genuinely self-custody — Coinbase does not hold the keys. The risks Veyrnox addresses are the BIP-39 seed phrase, the browser-extension surface, and the tight coupling to Coinbase the exchange, which pulls users back toward custodial UX. Veyrnox has none of those.
Can I import my Coinbase Wallet seed into Veyrnox?
Veyrnox can import an existing Coinbase Wallet seed phrase. If you want a completely fresh Veyrnox wallet, you can also create a new one and transfer funds over instead.
Does Veyrnox support the same chains as Coinbase Wallet?
Veyrnox covers the top 10 assets across their native chains — BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT, MATIC, ARB, OP, AVAX, and BNB. Coinbase Wallet supports a larger long tail; Veyrnox covers the assets that hold most of the value with a stronger security model.
How does Veyrnox compare on fees?
Veyrnox charges $0 for wallet operations. You pay only each chain's native network fee. Coinbase Wallet in-app swaps route through Coinbase infrastructure, which takes a spread; Veyrnox does not run its own swap product on the free tier.
Do I need a Coinbase account to use Veyrnox?
No. Veyrnox has no account, no email, no KYC. It is not affiliated with Coinbase, Binance, or any exchange. Everything lives on your device and in your personal cloud (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.).
What about my NFTs?
NFTs live on-chain. Send them from your Coinbase Wallet address to your Veyrnox address on the same chain. Veyrnox displays them in the asset view.
How much does Veyrnox cost?
Free forever for full self-custody, Face ID, and 10 assets. Safety Plus is $5.99/month and adds Shamir-sharded seed backup plus Coercion Resistance. AI Security Protection is $19.99/month, coming soon.
When is Android available?
iOS today, Android coming soon. Coinbase Wallet ships on iOS and Android; Veyrnox is iOS-first because the Secure Enclave and iCloud Keychain make the no-seed hardware-bound model cleaner to ship first.
